A narrative review on genotoxic potential of medicinal plants used in Ayurveda

Genotoxic substances are those which capable to induce a destructive effect on cell’s genetic material. It can be either carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen or cytotoxic depending upon the dose, duration and mode of usage. Mutations may manifest in many forms as duplication, deletion insertion. However, all mutagens genotoxic, not genotoxins mutations. Currently traditional medicines plant drugs used across globe without strict medical supervision. In country like India, folklore play pivot role health sector. Irrational long-term usage any plant-based drug adverse reactions. Till date there is no single hand information about genotoxic effects medicinal plants Ayurveda. Many reported for toxicity potent candidates From available literature 184 articles genotoxicity plants. After shortlisting with inclusion exclusion criteria’s 57 found potential Present review reports 32 combination. contains various array drugs, example poisonous Arka, Dhattura, Mandookaparni – medhya rasayana, Guduchi immunomodulator so on.
